BARRIE, ONT. — Georgian College is inviting First Nations and people of aboriginal ancestry who are interested in a career in the skilled trades to apply for the Aboriginal Skilled Trades Education Program.

The Indigenous Studies department at Georgian College, in partnership with the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples, is seeking 15 highly motivated applicants to start a career in the skilled trades beginning Sept. 5, 2017 at Georgian's various campuses. Applicants can apply to one of the following certificate programs:

• Cabinet Making Techniques (Barrie campus)

• Carpentry and Renovation Techniques (Owen Sound and Barrie campuses)

• Electrical Techniques (Midland and Owen Sound campuses)

• Mechanical Techniques – Industrial Maintenance (Midland campus)

• Mechanical Techniques – Marine Engine Mechanic (Midland campus)

• Mechanical Techniques – Small Engine Mechanic (Midland campus)

• Plumbing Techniques (Midland campus)

• Welding Techniques (Midland and Owen Sound campuses).

The following costs will be covered: tuition fees, textbook fees, tools, parking passes and Ontario College Application Service fees.

In order to be eligible, applicants must identify as First Nations (status or non-status), Metis, Inuit, or a person of aboriginal ancestry; not currently live in a First Nations community; be willing to commit to a one-year, September 2017 to April/August 2018, certificate program; and be able to provide a transcript proving completion of an Ontario Secondary School diploma or equivalent, which includes Grade 12 English.

Mature students (19 years and older) who lack academic entrance qualifications may still be accepted into the program. Each applicant will be considered on an individual basis and acceptance will be determined through academic testing.

Applicants are asked to complete an Aboriginal Skilled Trades program application form and forward along a resume and one-page, approximately 250-word, cover letter. The application deadline is July 21.
