NEW YORK

The Museum of the City of New York is set for a $28-million expansion project, adding 2,130 square metres to the existing building.

Renovation plans include the lobby and a two-and-a-half-story addition at the rear of museum.

“The addition will enable us to better protect and house our collections while providing a brilliant new gallery for public exhibitions,” Newton P.S. Merrill, chairman of the board of trustees said.

The expansion, which will increase space by about 22 per cent and is slated for completion in 2008, was designed by Polshek Partnership Architects, which created renovations of the Brooklyn Museum and the American Museum of Natural History.

It will be the first major renovation since the museum’s landmark building on Fifth Avenue in East Harlem was completed in 1932.

The city is funding $17 million, the remainder is from private donors.

The expansion is part of a modernization project that will be completed in 2012 and will cost $70 million.
