The Ontario Realty Corporation is taking its show on the road, hosting a series of information sessions designed to bring designers and contractors up to speed on both project opportunities and its newly updated project delivery model.

During the past couple of years, ORC has been updating this model in collaboration with the industry through the strategic opportunities committee (SOC).

A key strategy has been alignment, where possible, with industry standard practices.

A case in point is adoption of new construction and consulting contracts based respectively on CCDC 2-2008 and OAA Document 600-2008.

The two and one-half hour information sessions will be held in 10 centres across the province, kicking off in Cambridge Aug. 11 and wrapping up in Ottawa Oct. 6. A webinar is scheduled for Oct. 19.

Participants will be briefed on:

•Roles and responsibilities of ORC staff, consultants, contractors and project management service providers in the revised project delivery model

•How contractors and consultants prequalify for ORC projects

•How construction and consulting services are procured for ORC projects

•Details of the new construction and consulting contracts, including an explanation of key supplementary conditions developed for use with these documents

•The improved process for payments to consultants and contractors.

The sessions will be conducted by ORC senior vice-president, project services, Mike Greidanus and Brian Watkinson, principal of Strategies for Impact! Inc., who has been retained by ORC to facilitate the work of SOC.

One of the organizations represented on the liaison committee is the Ontario General Contractors Association. It is circulating information to its members on the upcoming sessions.

“We are fully supportive of this initiative,” said OGCA president Clive Thurston. “The majority of the construction done for ORC is carried out by our members.

“That’s one of the reasons we’ve been so heavily involved in working with ORC to update the project-delivery model.”

Last year, ORC undertook more than $400 million in construction projects, making it a major customer of Ontario’s design and construction industry.

Additional information on the upcoming information sessions is available by searching for SOC's Communique 11 on the “What’s New” section on the ORC’s website.
