The federal government has announced that it will spend $77.5-million on prison expansions in British Columbia’s Fraser Valley over the next three years.

VANCOUVER

The federal government has announced that it will spend $77.5-million on prison expansions in British Columbia’s Fraser Valley over the next three years.

Canada’s Public Safety Minister Vic Toews said that the money is for the construction of a new 96-bed residence at the Kent Institution and Matsqui Institution.

Money is also allocated for building a new 96-bed chronic care centre at Ferndale Institution, as well as 24 new spaces at the Fraser Valley Institution.

The projects should be completed by 2014.

Toews said the Conservative government believes putting the extra funds into the prison system is a strong investment into having a safe and secure society.

“Action has a cost and that is a cost that Canadians are willing to pay because cost to society is much more, not just in dollars,” he said at a press conference in Abbotsford, B.C.
