Toronto mayoral candidate Rocco Rossi on Wednesday pledged to bring rapid bridge replacement technology to Toronto if he’s elected.

Toronto mayoral candidate Rocco Rossi on Wednesday pledged to bring rapid bridge replacement technology to Toronto if he’s elected.

Rapid bridge replacement involves a bridge being assembled in an off-site location and, once built, installed to replace a deteriorating bridge.

“Because the process of raising the bridge into place takes a matter of hours, traffic disruption is minimal,” Rossi said in a news release.

The City of Toronto “continues to use out-dated and out-moded methods of infrastructure development and repair that contribute to cost over-runs, project delays; and traffic congestion,” he said, citing the Jameson Avenue bridge project on Toronto’s Gardiner Expressway as an example.

Examples of rapid bridge replacement projects in Ontario include the Aberdeen Avenue Bridge in Hamilton, which Dufferin Construction replaced in 51 hours between July 30 and Aug. 3.

In recent days Rossi has also proposed extending the Allen Expressway into downtown Toronto to connect with the Gardiner, and said supports building a fixed link to the Toronto Island Airport.
