After decades of inaction with the growing Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA), CivicAction chair John Tory delivered bold advice to elected officials on how to urgently address the region’s transit deficit now.

To Toronto mayor Rob Ford, whose executive committee has voted to put off the transit funding debate, Tory called for an immediate city council debate on “how to pay for the transit he agrees we need”.

It is time the mayor specifically outlines his detailed alternative to new revenue tools, he said in his recent speech at the Empire Club of Canada.

To Ontario premier Kathleen Wynne, Tory called for detail on how new revenues collected will be kept accountable and dedicated to transportation.

Safeguards for taxpayers are needed because of voter skepticism caused by recent misuse of tax dollars, he said. The provincial government must do more “than it has done to erase the stench of past mismanagement and incompetence.”

Tory called for further action in ending political gamesmanship around the very important transportation issue at both City Hall and Queen’s Park.

He said a proper transportation system that includes public transit and adequate roads “is critical to our ability to attract investment and jobs and to improve our productivity, which we are constantly told we must do.”

He also pointed out that dramatically improved transportation is a huge quality of life issues, whether that relates to environmental considerations, or family time, or even just the leisure time needed for a balanced life.

On April 17, CivicAction launched the next phase in its Your32 campaign, which calls on residents and elected officials to join together to pledge their support for new sources for investment in transportation that are dedicated, efficient, transparent and accountable, regional, fair and sustainable.
