Professional engineer Catherine Karakatsanis, the Toronto-based executive vice-president of the building, technology and energy global business unit of Morrison Hershfield, has been elected president of Engineers Canada.

Karakatsanis, who obtained her undergraduate and master’s degrees at the University of Western Ontario, has had a diversified career with extensive engineering and management experience.

She joined the consulting engineering and management firm of Morrison Hershfield in 1989. She has been a director since 2005.

Engineers Canada said Karakatsanis has actively volunteered in the engineering community for more than two decades, serving as president and chair of both Professional Engineers Ontario and the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers. She currently sits on the board of Engineers Without Borders.

“She brings her passion for ensuring the next generation of engineers is equipped to face the engineering challenges of the future through her involvement on the board of the Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation and as the chair of the University of Western Ontario’s faculty of engineering advisory council,” Engineers Canada said.

Karakatsanis will lead the organization’s board as it works with the engineering profession’s constituent associations across Canada.
