TORONTO

Toronto is set to host the 22nd annual United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America National Apprenticeship Contest at Roundhouse Park in downtown Toronto next summer.

The contest pits Canada’s top apprentices against each other in carpentry, drywall, millwright and floor covering trades.

“Its purpose is to gain exposure to the skilled trades that are part of the carpenters union and also to promote the skills required to be successful apprentices,” says Mike Yorke, president of Carpenters District Council of Ontario (CDCO) Local 27.

“Our members have built this city and it is great to have the next generation of carpenters showcasing their skills to the people of Toronto and people from around the world at such a public venue.”

Equally important is that contractors, government partners and other stakeholders see first hand the type of skills apprentices develop, said Colleen Dignam, provincial training coordinator, CDCO.

CDCO Locals 27 and 675 and Local 2309 of the Millwrights Regional Council of Ontario will host the 2014 competition, which will be held Aug. 21-23.
