OSHAWA, ONT. — A 50-year-old Oshawa man was seriously injured and airlifted to hospital after heavy materials he was working with fell on him, various media outlets are reporting.
According to Durham Police, the incident occurred around 7 p.m. Monday (April 10) aboard a ship at the Oshawa harbour.
Since this incident involved an onboard employee, Transport Canada is leading the investigation with the assistance of the Labour Program.
"This investigation is still ongoing. As this is an active investigation, according to the Canada Labour Code, we cannot comment on the specifics, nor can we share publicly any documents related to it during the process," a statement from the government reads.
Other reports have stated the man was unloading steel when it fell on him, though no confirmation has been made by authorities.
Police report the ship had to stay in the harbour until this morning as part of the investigation.
"The health and safety of Canadian workers is paramount and the Government of Canada is dedicated to keeping workplaces safe, fair and productive," the government statement continues.
