PRESCOTT, ONT.—A crane operator died when his crane hit soft ground and toppled into water at a worksite in Prescott, Ont. on Monday, July 17.
A Ministry of Labour report indicated the worker, who was subcontracted by Steve Polite Sand and Gravel, at whose premises the incident occurred, was taken to hospital where he died.
A local media report said the crane operator was a 77-year-old from Lakefield, Ont. and added the crane tipped over at the edge of a gravel pit and fell into a pond at the bottom. The pit is located on McCully Road, about 70 kilometres south of Ottawa.
Company owner Steve Polite was quoted as saying, "He loved his job, he did, he lived for this. I was talking to him just an hour before it happened and he was smiling. He was happy. He was excited to go digging, that's all he wanted to do was just dredge some sand."
Ministry of Labour inspectors and an engineer were assigned to investigate and visited the facility on both July 17 and 18 in pursuing the investigation.
