Phase 2 prep contracts awarded for Gordie Howe Bridge project

WINDSOR, ONT. — The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA) and its partners have announced the launch of Phase Two of the Preparatory Activities at the Canadian Port of Entry (POE) as a prelude to the start of construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge.

Three contracts have been awarded for high voltage cabling and accessories, transmission and distribution line relocation works totalling $86 million, notes a media statement issued May 1.

The contracts have been awarded to Prysmian Cables and Systems Canada Ltd. for cable and accessories; Valard Construction LP for transmission line relocations; and AMS, a joint venture of Amico Infrastructures Inc. and Mid-South Contractors Ltd., for distribution line relocation.

The utility relocations as part of this work will focus on the Hydro One power corridor that supports Ontario's power grid.

The site of the future Canadian POE contains overhead lines that need to be relocated.

Many of them will be moved underground and some connected to new transmission towers.

Through these contracts, the overhead lines will be relocated underground and the manufactured cables placed in concrete-encased duct banks.

In addition to working closely with Hydro One, the WDBA will work with West Windsor Power to relocate high-voltage transmission lines that are being impacted by the project.

Undertaking the work at this time will ensure that the Canadian POE site will be ready for the private-sector partner chosen to build the Gordie Howe International Bridge project, notes the media statement.

The project will be undertaken using the public-private partnership management model with three teams moving forward after the request for qualifications process.

The short-listed consortiums announced Jan. 20 are:

Legacy Link Partners — members include SNC-Lavalin (various divisions), HDR Corp., Leonhardt, Andra and Partners (if cable stayed), Aas-Jakobsen (if suspension), Golder, American Bridge Canada, VINCI Construction, DRICCA (joint venture with Ajax Paving, Dan's Excavating, C.A. Hull Co Inc., Toebe Construction, Amico Infrastructures Inc.), John Laing Investments, Alfred Benesch & Company and Barton Malow;

Bridging North America — members includes AECOM, ACS Infrastructure Canada, Dragados Canada, Aecon, RBC Dominion Securities, URS Federal Services, Turner Construction, Carlos Fernandez Casado S.L/FHECOR Ingenieros Consultores S.A., Moriyama and Teshima Architects, Smith-Miller + Hawkinson Architects LLP and DBI Services LLC; and

CanAm Gateway Partners — members include Arup-Hatch Mott McDonald Design JV, EllisDon, Roy Jorgensen Associates, Bechtel, Fengate Capital, BBGI CanHoldco, Bergmann Associates, NORR Ltd., Traylor Bros and Egis Projects S.A.

The multi-billion-dollar bridge is expected to open in 2020.
